Dental Cleanings and Hygiene Therapy

Oral health means more than just an attractive smile. Poor oral health and untreated oral disease can significantly impact quality of life. In many cases, the condition of the mouth mirrors the condition of the body as a whole. New research is showing a relationship between periodontal (gum) disease and stroke, heart disease, and even pre-term low-birth-weight babies.

Without routine dental cleanings and inadequate brushing/flossing, a white sticky substance called plaque will build up along your teeth. This dental plaque consists of bacteria known to cause gum disease (gingivitis and periodontitis). The bacteria in dental plaque will harden over time to form a deposit known as tartar (dental calculus). This tartar harbours bacteria and will damage the supporting gum tissue of our teeth, leading to inflammation, infection, and, eventually, tooth loss.

Unfortunately, gum disease is a silent disease that likely won't cause any pain or symptoms, just like high blood pressure. That's why we recommend our patients be seen for regular dental cleaning appointments with our hygienists. Hygiene appointments consist of regular gum assessments and dental plaque removal and calculus removal. These maintenance appointments are the backbone of a healthy smile and your general health.
